Friday morning we saw Debbie for a tutorial. As she had been off for a few weeks, she was unaware that we had changed our ideas from our original pitch to her. She sat and watched our film through and then gave us feedback. She was very unsure about our structure we had created from the script and gave us a lot of constructive criticism back. She noted she felt the whole story was given away in the first scene, and that we should re-think the structure of the whole film. She also picked up on the fact that there was nothing that could tell the viewer that parts of one scene were on different days, and that the fact two of our main character that were meant to be related seems extremely unrealistic, as the age gaps and accents were too different. Although we explained to her the issues we had with finding actors and changed ideas constantly, she suggested re-shooting. Due to travelling and other commitments, this wasn't an option we could use, so we had to reconsider the process we had already begun.
At the beginning of this week, Chrissie and Christie sat and reconstructed our drama, using the first scene that gave our story away as flashback throughout the film instead.
After they had rearranged the structure, I sat in with them as Debbie took another look at the piece. Although she was still not 100% about the film, we did receive more positive feedback and she said that the new structure we had worked better. She also suggested using text to help clarify the fact time was passing and different days were approaching, and also to remove any fact that Ben and Maggie were related, so we could leave the relationship open to the audience. We also realized it would be important to have a strong sound design for both atmos and main sounds within scenes. TS went back out to record descriptive noise that we hoped would help tell the story much better.
